Big Idea
Negative numbers help us to model many real world situations

Q1. Describe what a positive numbers, negative numbers and zero mean in the terms of
  • Keeping score in Math Mania
  • Temperature Readings
Ans- Positive numbers mean the team answered questions correctly, negative numbers mean mean the team answered the questions incorrectly and zero means the team couldn't answer any question. In temperature reading a positive number means the weather is hot and the negative number means the weather is cold and zero means the weather is normal and perfect.
Q2- Describe how to compare the following types of numbers to decide which is greater. Use examples to illustrate your thinking.
  • 2 positive numbers
  • 2 negative numbers
  • a positive number and a negative number
Ans-a) We need to use a number line if we want to compare 2 positive numbers. If the number has greater distance from zero then the number is greater then the other number. Example:- 5 >4
b) We also need to use a number line to compare 2 negative numbers. If the number has greater distance from 0 then the smaller it is then the other number, and the smaller the distance from zero the greater the number. Example: -3>-8
c)If you want to compare a positive and a negative number, you should always use a number line. In a number line numbers on the right hand are greater then the numbers on the left hand. Example: 4>-2
Q3-Describe how to locate numbers on a number line. Use examples to illustrate your thinking be sure to include positive and negative numbers as well as fractions and decimals in your examples.
Ans- Positive numbers are located on the right hand side and the negative numbers are located on the left hand side. Between the numbers fraction and decimals are included.
